Rhinoplasty

The main goal of rhinoplasty is to bring about an aesthetically pleasing, functional and proportionally symmetrical nose. Patients seeking rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes commonly desire a nose that is better suited to their face, and one that does not draw attention away from their other features. Often times, this means making the nose smaller or larger, reducing a hump on the nose to give a straight profile, straightening a crooked nose, and in some cases narrowing or widening the nose. A small percentage of patients seeking rhinoplasty are those who deal with discomfort or breathing difficulties due to structural abnormalities or previous nose injuries.

If no cosmetic change is desired, these issues can be addressed on their own but they may also be treated in tandem with cosmetic concerns. The end result should be a nose that is proportionate, balanced and functional.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty procedures can be done in one of two ways: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. There are inherent advantages and disadvantages to each procedure, but either procedure should be capable of bringing about the patient's desired results. Neither procedure is objectively better. The better procedure is the one that is personally better suited for both the patient and the surgeon to design and create the nose the patient wants.

Rhinoplasty Assessment

Detailed planning and meticulous technique is needed to produce a beautiful, natural and long-term result. Dr. Jaggi recognizes that the key to a happy patient and a good outcome in rhinoplasty surgery is good planning. Dr. Jaggi will meet with each patient in consultation first to assess their nasal structures and breathing as well as their general health, current use of medications, supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The size, shape and skin quality of your nose, together with your overall facial features will be carefully assessed and noted. Dr. Jaggi will listen to the patient's expectation and discuss the surgical options and risks. Dr. Jaggi will then recommend a plan based on what can be realistically achieved with rhinoplasty surgery.

Rhinoplasty Surgery and Recovery

Rhinoplasty surgery will take between one and three hours to complete. The surgery will be performed with general anesthesia.

During the Rhinoplasty recovery stage, patients are advised to take a minimum of two weeks off work. The recovery from Rhinoplasty is variable but typically most swelling subsides in 2-3 weeks. During this time, patients may also experience stiffness, a bit of bleeding and bruising. However, pain medication is prescribed and most patients find the recovery comfortable and very tolerable.

The nasal splint is typically removed from the nose one week after surgery. At this time the nose will not be in its final shape. The nose will take an additional few weeks to improve in appearance and requires approximately 12-18 months to refine and heal completely.

Preparing For Your Surgery

Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding. Please arrange for a responsible adult to take you and pick you up from your surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
